Cold weather brings lots of angry stranded motorists to our trade counter. None more angry than the customer who came charging in after a very cold winter night. The previous weekend he had purchased, from us, anti-freeze for both his wife and his own cars - A VW Golf 1.8 GTI and his Mitsubishi 3.5 ltr Shogun - and he had the receipt to prove it. Both engines were frozen solid and the Golf had a cracked head. He was an angry man and he was looking to get compensation or retribution. He claimed he had followed the instructions on the can. Drained both systems flushed through then added the anti-freeze. He wanted to know if we were prepared to agree to his repairs or "would he have to go the whole road?" Although I felt sorry for the man I had to point out that the receipt showed he had only purchased 2 litres of anti-freeze. He asked what that had to do with anything? I pointed out that the Shogun required 5 litres and the Golf 3 litre. He had put 1 litre into the Shogun and 500 ml into the Golf and saved the remaining 500 ml for topping up, not realising that the recommended mixture was 50/50. The previous nights' temperature had been -25 C. He left with a very red face and large repair bill in front of him.
