Rattray Motor Spares has been trading in the South West Glasgow area since 1958.
In this series of stories we relates some of the true and humourous
events that have occurred over the years.
Batteries are often wrongly diagnosed as the culprit for non-starting. It's easy to understand why; it's the easiest component to be removed. One of the most weird warranty claims we ever had was in December 1996, after a bitterly cold night. A customer brought back a battery for a warranty claim. He told us that water was pouring out of the casing, and he had it in the boot of his friend's car, which was at our front door. I went outside to have a look at the problem. Sure enough there was liquid pouring out of the battery all over his friend's boot. His problem was that he lived out at the Campsie Hills and the night before the temperature had plummeted to -32C. Battery acid starts to freeze at -21C. The electrolyte content, which was a solid block of ice, had cracked the battery casing and was now melting. Hence the "water" pouring out of the battery. Unfortunately this was not a manufacturing defect and the warranty claim was rejected.
